THE POLAR EXPRESS™
Departing from Stearns Depot, this magical, one-hour round-trip journey to the North Pole brings the beloved story by Chris Van Allsburg to life. Passengers are treated to hot chocolate and a cookie as the Conductor reads the story onboard, and everyone is encouraged to wear cozy pajamas. Upon arrival, Santa greets each car, delivers the first gift of Christmas—a sleigh bell—and leads a festive sing-along during the return trip. With multiple departures each evening and tickets that include the full experience, this holiday tradition is perfect for families looking to celebrate the season together.

Fall Color Runs
Embark on the Fall Color Run aboard the Big South Fork Scenic Railway — a three‑hour round-trip excursion showcasing Kentucky’s autumn beauty. Beginning at the historic Stearns depot, your journey winds across 16 miles of forested gorge as the train descends roughly 600 feet into the dramatic Big South Fork landscape to reach the Blue Heron Coal Mining Camp.
The Fall Color Run offers a scenic, immersive ride through Appalachia during its most colorful season—ideal for nature lovers, history enthusiasts, and fans of nostalgic rail travel.
Murder Mystery Train
The Big South Fork Scenic Railway’s Murder Mystery Train is an unforgettable evening of suspense, dinner, and interactive fun. This special event takes guests on a scenic ride to the historic Barthel Coal Camp, where a Southern-style dinner is served and a thrilling whodunit mystery unfolds. Reservations can be made online, by calling the ticket office, or in person on the day of the event—based on availability. Blue Heron Ghost Mine
Hear chilling tales spun from the hills and hollows of the Cumberland Plateau on this one-of-a-kind storytelling event. Beginning at 6:00 PM at Blue Heron Mine-18, guests will experience the beauty of Kentucky and the solitude of the historic site while being captivated by talented local storytellers. Don’t miss this unique evening of folklore, atmosphere, and entertainment deep in the heart of the Big South Fork.
